Destination of the Week: Budapest

A Magical City of History, Baths, and Stunning Views

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Budapest, and let me tell you, it quickly became one of my favorite European cities! Whether you’re after grand historical sites, relaxing thermal baths, or breathtaking views over the Danube, Budapest has it all. Here’s a little review of my trip and my top recommendations.

First Impressions: A Blend of Old and New

Budapest is a city with two distinct personalities: Buda, with its rolling hills and historical charm, and Pest, the flatter, livelier side known for its vibrant cafés, bars, and cultural hotspots. Walking through the streets, you feel an incredible mix of history and modern energy. The architecture is a stunning mix of Baroque, Neoclassical, and Art Nouveau, and no matter where you look, there’s something eye-catching.

Favourite Things to Do in Budapest

Explore Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion

If you love history and panoramic views, this is a must-visit! The Buda Castle sits on a hill and offers spectacular views over Pest and the Danube River. Just a short walk away is Fisherman’s Bastion, where you’ll get fairy-tale-like towers with perfect views of Parliament and the Chain Bridge. Go at sunset to watch the city glow!

Tip: The Buda Castle Funicular is a fun way to get up the hill if you’d rather skip the hike.

Relax in the Thermal Baths

Budapest is famous for its thermal baths, and no trip is complete without taking a dip. My personal favorite was Széchenyi Baths—a grand complex with outdoor and indoor pools, heated by natural hot springs. It’s especially magical in winter when you can soak outside in the steamy water while it’s cold out.

Alternative: If you prefer something a little smaller and more local, try the Rudas Baths on the Buda side for a more traditional, Ottoman-style bath experience.

Stroll along the Danube Promenade

One of the best things to do in Budapest is simply walk along the Danube Promenade. The views of the city are unbeatable, and it’s the perfect way to take in iconic sites like the Parliament Building, the Chain Bridge, and Gellért Hill. The Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial, commemorating the victims of World War II, is a poignant stop along the way.

Admire the Hungarian Parliament Building

You can’t miss the Hungarian Parliament Building—it’s one of the most stunning landmarks in Europe. Tours are available, and I highly recommend them if you’re a history lover. The architecture inside and out is breathtaking, and learning about Hungary’s political history adds depth to the visit.

Fun Fact: The building is nearly 100 meters tall, making it one of the tallest buildings in Budapest!

Enjoy a Ruin Bar in the Jewish Quarter

Budapest is known for its quirky ruin bars, and Szimpla Kert is the most famous. These bars are located in formerly abandoned buildings, filled with mismatched furniture, street art, and a buzzing atmosphere. They’re a great place to experience Budapest’s nightlife in a completely unique setting.

Recommendation: Even if you don’t drink, visiting a ruin bar just for the experience is worth it. The ambiance alone is something to behold.

Must-Try Foods in Budapest

Budapest is also a paradise for food lovers! I couldn’t leave without trying the famous goulash (a hearty beef stew with paprika), langos (deep-fried dough topped with sour cream and cheese), and chimney cake (a sweet, doughy treat rolled in cinnamon and sugar). Every meal felt like a cozy comfort food experience.

Why I’d Recommend Budapest

Budapest is an affordable city compared to many other European capitals, which means you can enjoy luxury experiences without the luxury price tag. It’s also incredibly walkable, full of culture and history, and has a lively vibe that makes you want to keep exploring.

Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or just looking to relax in beautiful surroundings, Budapest offers something for everyone. I would absolutely recommend it as a destination for anyone who wants a unique blend of old-world charm and modern excitement.

Final Thoughts

Budapest is a city that pulls you in with its beauty and keeps you hooked with its vibrant energy. If you’re planning a European city break, this one should be high on your list. Whether it’s soaking in the thermal baths, enjoying sunset views from Fisherman’s Bastion, or getting lost in the historic streets of Buda and Pest, you won’t be disappointed!
